Why are we called RUG?
RUG was named during the early days of gallery installation. John Abell's watercolours were displayed in the window as the gallery was constructed. Our first punter threw the doors open excitedly to ask how much wed sell one of the rugs for, pointing to a brightly painted watercolour. On learning that they were paintings and not rugs, the visitor left, saying 'Shame, I'd have given you 20 pound for one of those rugs'. Also, having previously been a rugby store, RUG was christened on the spot.
